Colorless and transparent liquid with pungent smell. It consists of 45%~70% m-xylene, 15%~25% p-xylene and 10%~15% o-xylene. Miscible randomly with ethanol, chloroform or diethyl ether, insoluble in water. Low toxicity. It is prone to combustion and may burn or explode when encounters open flame or high temperature. It has a violent reaction with oxidant. If flow velocity is too fast, static electricity may appear. Its vapor is heavier than the air and can spread in lower position to quite far place, and catches on fire when encounters open flame.
Application fields:
1. Used as solvents of coating, resin, dye, ink, etc.;
2. Used as the synthetic monomer in medicine, explosive, agricultural chemicals and other industries;
3. Used as a component of gasoline with high octane value, to remove the asphalt on vehicle body;
4. Used mainly for making the tissue and slice transparent and removing wax from them by the hospital pathology department.
Leakage emergency treatment:
Evacuate people to the safe area and isolate them immediately, strictly control the entry to and exit from the site.
Cut off the fire source, and the processing staff must wear a self-supporting positive pressure respirator and heat insulation suit.
Cut down the leakage source as far as possible and avoid the liquid flowing into sewage and flood drainage trench.
Small amount of leakage: absorb with activated carbon or other inert materials. It may also be rinsed and diluted by the emulsion formed by non-combustible dispersant, and drained to the wastewater system.
Large amount of leakage: build an embankment or dig a pit to take the liquid in; cover with foam; Pump the liquid into a dedicated container by an explosion-proof pump, and then recover or transfer it to the waste treatment place. Collect and transfer the contaminated soil to a safe place; strengthen ventilation of the contaminated area along the ground;build an embankment rapidly and constrain the spread of xylene on water surface with enclosures etc.
Protective measures:
Respiratory system protection: wear filter masks, and respirator in case of emergency.
Eye protection: wear chemical safety goggles.
Body protection: wear impermeable work clothes.
Hand protection: wear rubber gloves.
Other: smoking, dining and drinking are strictly forbidden at workplace. Take a shower and change clothes after getting off work. Pay attention to personal sanitary.
Emergency treatment:
Contact with skin: take off the clothes got tainted and rinse the skin with suds and clear water.
Contact with eyes: lift up the eyelid and rinse with flowing water or normal saline. Get medical attention.
Inhalation: leave the site quickly to a place with fresh air. If necessary, give oxygen therapy or artificial respiration. Get medical attention.
Ingestion: drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention.
Method of extinguishing: spray water to cool the container and move the container to an open position.
Extinguishing agent: foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder and sandy soil.
First aid treatment:
Move to a place with fresh air immediately and give oxygen therapy if necessary. Remove the poison on clothes and skin.
The glucuronic acid lactone can be used as the antidote.
Orally take B group vitamins to prevent of encephaledema.
Prevention:
Reinforce the ventilation and discharge of plant, and sealing condition and maintenance of production equipment.
Monitor the concentration of methyl benzene in the air frequently.
Pay attention to personal protection and wear protection appliance if necessary; receive physical examination periodically.
Keep far from fire and heat source. Avoid to store and transport the xylene together with any oxidant.
Use of any tool which is prone to generate sparks is not allowed.
